Does our hair age!

HAIR TEXTURE CHANGES AS WE GET OLDER… IT GETS DRIER AND FRIZZIER. HOW CAN A CUT DEAL WITH THAT?

Firstly, accept that your hair is changing with your hormones and embrace it. A good cut can make all the difference – it can make hair easier to manage, easier to style and help it to look its best every day, rather than just after a salon visit.

A good cut takes into account your face shape, lifestyle (i.e. will it require much maintenance?), and hair type. It should make your life easier, not add unnecessary time to your routine in the morning!

If your hair is dry, combat this with the right combination of products. Nourishing, hydrating shampoos and conditioners (I personally love Kerastase Bain Satin shampoo and Lait Vital conditioner), oils (like Moroccanoil) and masques (my favourite is Kerastase Masquintense) will noticeably improve the condition of your hair if used regularly. Masques are especially important – aim to do a masque once a week for at least 20 minutes, to re-hydrate and restore lost moisture.

HORMONES AFFECT OUR HAIR TOO??

As our hormones change with age, this has a direct effect on our hair. Follicles receive less blood supply and hair can get thinner; this means it’s more susceptible to damage and dehydration. While I am not a medical professional, I do think it’s advisable to have your hormone levels checked at least once a year to ensure that there is nothing going on health-wise that is affecting your overall appearance.

HOW TO DEAL WITH THINNING HAIR.

If your hair is thinning due to the natural ageing process,  the key is to look after the hair you have. Consider a shorter haircut, as this can give the appearance of volume and thickness. Specific supplements can also noticeably help, as they promote fuller-looking hair and encourage healthy hair growth.

Healthy hair starts from the inside, so it’s very important to have a balanced diet that is rich and varied in nutrients and vitamins. Vitamin D, fish oils, protein and zinc are all key to ensuring the health of the hair. As mentioned previously, specific hair supplements like Viviscal can also help, as they contain key vitamins like biotin, iron, and zinc to support healthy hair growth.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD WE ASSESS OUR HAIRSTYLE?

It’s a good idea to reassess your hairstyle once every 6 months, in Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter. In the summertime, hair can be more relaxed and undone, but moving into the winter social season, you might want something more structured and need a change in style to reflect that. We change our wardrobes in February and September, so why not our hair too?

SHOULD CHANGES BE GRADUAL, I.E. PLAY IT SAFE?

Changes don’t always need to be done gradually – if you’ve been thinking about trying something new for a while, go for it or you may change your mind! However, don’t make any spur-of-the-moment decisions which you may regret later – ask your hairdresser for advice.  That said, A big change can be a great idea – it can completely revamp your look, but remember to consider all the options: will it work with your skin tone and lifestyle? What’s the maintenance like? Are you willing to commit to having it done regularly? This all needs to be considered before making a decision.

IS A COMPLETE CHANGE OF STYLE MORE YOUTHFUL?

Not at all – the more comfortable you are with your hair, the more confident you are, and confidence is key. Wear your hair however makes you the happiest and this will shine through.

CAN A GOOD CUT MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU TO BLOW DRY AT HOME?

A good cut is the absolute foundation of a good home blow dry! But be honest with yourself – don’t choose a specific haircut that you know you won’t have the time or energy to style every day, go for something that compliments you and is within your ability to manage.

WHAT ABOUT THE RULE THAT LONG HAIR SHOULD NOT BE SEEN ON OLDER WOMEN?

This is a hugely common misconception and not the case at all – long hair can be worn beautifully at ANY age. The key is personalisation – it needs to compliment you, your face shape and your lifestyle. If you love your long hair, you will be miserable without it – and this will age you far more than anything else!

WHICH CELEBRITY, IN YOUR OPINION, HAS ALWAYS HAD FABULOUS HAIR AND IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF LOOKING YOUNGER BY MAKING HER HAIR WORK FOR HER?

Jane Fonda is a fantastic example of a lady who cuts her hair for her face, not her age. She is not afraid to try different styles, but she always makes sure that they are the most flattering styles for her.

I’M CHANGING MY HAIR COLOUR – DO I NEED TO RETHINK MY MAKE-UP?

If you’re going for a big colour change, revamp your makeup to suit your new look. Lighter hair tones can wash you out while darker tones can create a stronger look, so adjust your makeup accordingly to counterbalance it.

ANY TIPS YOU CAN SUGGEST?

  • Ask your hairdresser questions about everything –product recommendations, styling tips, and when you need to come back.
  • Invest in good quality, nourishing hair products that will improve your hair’s health and appearance – masques are a key product for hydration and shine.
  • Use an SPF for your hair – just like skin, it needs protection from the sun and pollutants.
  • Trust your hairdresser (if they are long-standing)!
  • Ask your hairdresser as many questions as you can think of about maintenance etc – treat them just like your dentist.
  • Your hair is a reflection of what you put into your body. Try to incorporate foods such as oily fish, seeds, nuts and berries into your diet for healthy hair, skin and nails.
  • Colouring grey hair is very personal and depends on how the client feels about it. There is no denying that grey hair is a sign of ageing, but it can be very flattering and suit some people well; if you’re unsure, have a colour service which blends your greys with another shade for a more natural look.
  • When colouring your hair it is important take into account your skin tone and choose the colour to suit accordingly. Lighter shades can be more youthful and also require less upkeep than darker tones, as they have less visible regrowth.
